Marmaduke Cottage is the perfect retreat for couples and small families, sleeping up to three guests in two bedrooms and is a cosy Grade II listed cottage with lots of character, dating back to the early 19th Century. Located in a peaceful position in the Yorkshire village of Sancton, the cottage is nicely tucked away in a quiet side road yet just a short stroll from the award winning village pub.

With a cosy atmosphere and a pretty enclosed cottage garden with lawn and patio area for relaxing in the summer, Marmaduke Cottage provides an ideal retreat all year round and is fully flexible offering short breaks. Whether you want to explore the many attractions of the area or simply relax in the garden amongst the lavender and roses, this delightful cottages provides a warm welcome.

With its wide open skies and lush rolling landscapes, the Vale of York is one of Yorkshire's best kept secrets and one that the owners have lived in and farmed for many years. Yorkshire folk at heart and passionate about their beautiful area, they only live a few miles from the cottage and take immense pleasure in ensuring all guests get the warm welcome they deserve.

Lovingly restored throughout, Marmaduke Cottage still retains a wealth of its former features with wooden sash windows, exposed beams and even the original range in the living room. Traditionally furnished to compliment its original character, yet offering modern day conveniences, this cute cottage provides a welcoming retreat to return home to after an exciting day exploring the delights of the Yorkshire Wolds.

Sancton is a quiet pretty village with an impressive 15th Century church which is where Sir Marmaduke Langdale was laid to rest, the very person the cottage was named after! The village has an excellent pub (The Star) where you can enjoy a meal out and and also an award winning farm shop on Drewton Estate where there is also a restaurant (just a two minute car ride from the cottage). Also within easy reach by car is the bustling town of Beverley (nine miles away) with its cobbled streets, impressive minster, weekly market and great choice of independent and big name shops. Beverley is also popular with race goers with its picturesque race course perfectly placed on The Westwood where cattle freely graze.

For those who enjoy nature, leisurely cycle rides, walks through beautiful countryside and scenic car journeys, this beautiful part of Yorkshire is sure to please. It also has immense appeal for those with a passion for fine dining with a great choice of restaurants and excellent pubs within easy reach. The historic cities of York and Hull make great days out and there are no end of attractions to suit all ages including: The Deep, one of the world's most impressive aquariums located in Hull; The spectacular estate of Castle Howard; the Jorvik Centre in York; York Maze for a great day out in the country and the chance to tackle the country's largest maze; and The breathtaking Lavender Farms at Terrington to name just a few.

Accommodation comprises:

Ground floor

  • Kitchen with lovely exposed ceiling beams, plenty of cupboards, Belfast sink, microwave, electric oven/hob, washing machine and fridge/freezer.
  • Dining area with table and chairs, which like the kitchen, has quarry tiles on the floor and exposed beams.
  • Welcoming sitting room with the wonderful original decorative cast iron range (this is not working), seating, flat screen television and wonderful beams on the ceiling.
  • First floor

  • Double bedroom with plenty of space for clothes storage.
  • Pretty single bedroom with lovely views over the garden.
  • Cheerful family bathroom with WC, wash basin and bath.
  • Outside: The cottage has a delightful sunny cottage garden ablaze with colour during the summer months. There is a lawn where the little ones can let off steam and a patio where you can enjoy alfresco dining to the sweet smell of the roses and lavender. Parking available on the lane or in the village car park.

    Additional information: The cottage has many original features including the staircase which is steep. Prices include heating, linen, electricity and towels, along with Wi-Fi internet access. Unfortunately no pets. Fully flexible short beaks are offered all year round (three night minimum stays). Sorry but no dogs.
